Frenkie de Jong: Barcelona to sign £65m Ajax and Netherlands midfielder

Barcelona announced Wedenesday that it added midfielder Frenkie de Jong, who will be joining the fold in the summer.

The 21-year-old will join Barca on July 1 for 75 million euros ($85 million), with a further 11 million euros due to Ajax in additional payments.

"An important addition", he said.

De Jong signs a five year contract, stretching until the end of the 2023/24 season.

De Jong went on to explain that Barcelona has been his "dream club", explaining why he eventually chose the Camp Nou after much deliberation.

Frenkie de Jong will join Barcelona in the summer.

The Catalan club says the "versatile" De Jong is "strong in the one-on-one" and can play either as a defensive or attacking midfielder. I am also relieved to get everything done.

President Josep Maria Bartomeu, general manager Pep Segura and CEO, Òscar Grau were in Amsterdam on Wednesday to close the deal.

De Jong, who is already a Netherlands worldwide, has signed a five-year deal with LaLiga champions.

De Jong had been widely expected to move to Paris for €75 million, but the Telegraaf and Spanish media reported late on Tuesday that PSG had dropped out of the race.

'Combining in the short space is entirely De Jong's thing.

De Jong's rapidly rising status belies the fact he has made just 65 appearances for the first team.

Meanwhile, they will also face Real Madrid in the Champions League round of 16.

De Jong will continue a tradition of Dutch players who have played for Barcelona, including Cruyff, Ronald Koeman, Marc Overmars, Patrick Kluivert and Franck de Boer.
