Hulu price cut happens just as Netflix gets more expensive

Hulu announced this month that it finished 2018 with more than 25 million subscribers in the United States, while Netflix had 58.5 million subscribers in the country as of September.

By comparison, Netflix's base plan - which allows for a single standard definition stream - costs $8.99 per month, which means that Hulu's base plan now costs $3 less.

Hulu often dangled its base subscription plan for $5.99 per month on a promotional basis. Hulu didn't give a reason for the price hike, merely talking about the perks that a Live TV subscription offers to customers instead.

Hulu + Live TV Plan (Now $44.99, previously $39.99) - Hulu's live TV service includes access to the standard plan's on-demand content, along with more than 60 live sports, news, and entertainment channels.

Even though Netflix still commands a massive share of the online streaming audience - with 58 million USA customers alone - Hulu had 25 million subscribers as of the end of 2018.

Netflix stock, though, has struggled since the company last reported quarterly results.

Netflix shares fell just under 1 percent on Wednesday.

Hulu will have one price-hike, however.

Hulu has spent the a year ago focusing on domestic subscription growth. Unlike Hulu, Netflix has global reach - and with that, about 139 million paid subscribers overall.

The deal is said to close in the first half of 2019.

Ads are annoying and not something I particularly like when I just want to be entertained, but if significantly reduces the price of entry, it certainly makes it an attractive option.

However, Comcast said it does not plan on quickly selling its 30% stake in Hulu, and WarnerMedia still maintains control over 10% of the company. Price Charts from TradingView.
