Is Greenland's Ice Melting Too Face To Stop Rapid Sea Rise?

For the study published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the team found the rate of ice loss had accelerated to almost four times what it was in 2003 by 2012, much of that coming not from glaciers calving into the sea but from large rivers of meltwater from the ice sheet itself. This means the melting happened from surface ice mass, inland from the coastline, the authors found.

Bevis and other co-authors of the study believe that this melting is caused by global warming, and warn about the large deposits of water flowing into the ocean during the summer.

Bevis: A lot of recent focus has been on increasing rates of glacial discharge, often driven by ocean warming.

"But now we recognise a second serious problem: increasingly, large amounts of ice mass are going to leave as melt-water, as rivers that flow into the sea".

He said the findings could have "serious implications" for coastal USA cities, including NY and Miami, as well as island nations that are particularly vulnerable to rising sea levels.

And there is no turning back, Bevis said.

According to a PTI report, scientists are concerned about the sea level rise. Here's the manner by which it works: When the North Atlantic Oscillation is in what researchers call a "positive" phase, the skies above Greenland will, in general, be cloudy, and along these lines, don't encourage melting, Bevis said.

For the study, were evaluated the researchers in the period from 2003 to 2016, the satellite data from the Grace Mission (Gravity Recovery And Climate Experiment) and data from on-site measurements included.

It involves twin satellites that measure ice loss across Greenland. That amount of ice was enough to raise the global sea level by 0.03 inches a year.

However, the rate of ice loss across the island was far from steady. The same is happening in the Southwestern Greenland region, also previously considered safe.

"The only thing we can do is adapt and mitigate further global warming", he said.

These oscillations have been going on for thousands of years and before recently, they didn't have a large impact on Greenland's ice: The ice would melt when the cycle was negative and form again when it was positive.

Even more, both Southwest Greenland and Eastern Antarctic Ice Shelf were deemed as safe regions, not affected by global warming and ice sheet meltdown. Because of climate change, the base temperature is already close to the critical temperature at which coral bleaches, so an El Niño pushes the temperature over the critical threshold value.

The leading cause of the big melt is - you guessed it - a rise in global temperature caused by climate change. Greenland has been losing ice mass faster than Antarctica in the last few decades, so any major acceleration will lead to a significant acceleration in sea level rise.

According to Professor Bevis, the new findings indicate that scientists may not have been watching the right parts of the island to detect where potential sea-level rise would come from. Researchers studying sea level rise often focus on Greenland's southeast and northwest regions, home to large glaciers which see large icebergs break off and flow into the Atlantic Ocean, CNN reported.
