Stargazers freak out over 'unusual' super blood moon

At 1:18 a.m. the Moon will begin to turn red as it enters the center of Earth's shadow.

And because lunar eclipses are sometimes called "blood moons" as the moon darkens and turns a boring red when it passes into Earth's shadow, this week's skywatching event is being called a "super flower blood moon".

As the Earth's atmosphere acts like a lens, the Moon will not be blacked out but appear in different shades ranging from bright orange to a darkish tint, depending on conditions such as atmospheric dust. The full Flower Moon, the biggest and brightest supermoon of the year, will pass into Earth's shadow in a total lunar eclipse, turning blood red (okay, more of a rusty red) in the sky.

The total lunar eclipse will be the first to occur with a supermoon in almost six years, according to NASA.

During the eclipse, the moon had a reddish hue from the sunlight filtering through Earth's atmosphere.

Australian airline Qantas is putting on a one-off two-and-a-half-hour "Supermoon Scenic Flight" that will head east from Sydney over the Pacific for an unobstructed view of the southern sky. "I saw a photo and the Moon was very red, but now it's not that red", said primary school student Chui Yiu-chun, who was trying to catch a glimpse from the city's harbourfront. Pacific Time from the Western U.S., Canada, Mexico, Central and South America, Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands. "New Guinea also gets a good view".

"Europe and Africa and the Middle East are missing out completely, on this particular one". Unlike a solar eclipse, lunar eclipses are safe to watch with the naked eye.

According to the Planetarium, this does not happen every full moon "because the Moon's orbit is tilted by about 5 in relation to Earth's orbit around the Sun, so it is usually above or below the shadow cast by Earth".

The next total lunar eclipse will occur on the night of May 15, 2022 - and will be visible from the eastern Lower 48, which missed out on Wednesday morning's show.

But so far no apocalyptic consequences have been recorded from these celestial shows.

Known as a "super flower blood moon", the spectacle was visible at 4:11 a.m.
