Ontario Accelerates Rollout of Second Shots Targeting a Two-Dose Summer

"The province will then continue to expand eligibility for second dose appointments based on date of first dose", Ontario said today in a news release.

While the interval between first and second doses can be up to 16 weeks, Ontario will begin to offer second dose appointments at an earlier interval, based on availability of vaccines. The first group who will be eligible to book will be people who received their first dose between March 8 and April 18. "Having made so much progress administering first doses, we are now in a position to begin delivering second doses for a two-dose summer".

"Minimizing wastage will allow us to offer second doses of Astra Zeneca to fully vaccinate people faster, which in turn will support safe reopening of our communities and economy".

The premier also addressed the question about children returning to school before the end of the June. This will begin with individuals turning 80 and over in 2021, who will be eligible to book their second dose appointment expected to begin on May 31, 2021 at 8:00 a.m., followed by individuals aged 70 and over scheduled to begin the week of June 14, 2021.

The second dose strategy will be based on a "first-in and first-out" strategy, meaning residents are able to accelerate their second dose appointment based on the date of when they received their first dose. New appointments will automatically replace those previously booked through the provincial system, officials confirmed.

May 31 - age group 80+.

Up until now Ontario had only opened up second shots to residents with the highest-risk health conditions and to people who received AstraZeneca in March. Provincial health officer Dr. Bonnie Henry says there are enough confirmed deliveries of Pfizer and Moderna that the province is able to move up the interval.

Week of July 19: individuals who received their first dose between the week of April 19 to May 9, on a "first-in, first-out" basis. For example, this included individuals who can not work from home and individuals who have at-risk health conditions.

Individuals who received a first dose of AstraZeneca will see second dose intervals accelerate to a 12-week interval.

Reimer said that lower efficacy has been shown when second doses come prior to 12 weeks.

Moeti, said that 54 African countries have endorsed a resolution to strengthen local vaccine production through transfer of knowledge, technology and innovation alongside waiver of patents owned by multinational pharmaceutical firms.

She also notes that Shoppers Drug Mart locations in Toronto and participating pharmacies and primary care providers in Kingston and Windsor have received around 26,600 doses of the vaccine.

Who is already eligible for an accelerated second dose?

Some pharmacies in Toronto have received doses of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine after an earlier delay due to quality control issues, Ontario's Ministry of Health said Thursday.

It's not clear how many doses are at risk of going to waste, but Ontario is scrambling to use some 45,000 AstraZeneca shots by the end of May, with another 10,000 set to expire in June, while Manitoba has said it has 7,000 doses that will expire in a few days.
